📘Why do Ethiopians love Russian literature?💖

Russian literature is a true cultural phenomenon. The Russian classics are loved and read not only in their homeland but also abroad.

Mr. Ayalneh Mulatu, an Ethiopian writer, poet, playwright, and translator who writes in Amharic, explains why to NBC Ethiopia.

🇷🇺🇮🇷 On October 19, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov paid a working visit to Tehran.

He was received by President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian, held extensive talks with Foreign Minister of Iran Abbas Araghchi and held a meeting with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei.

🎙 Sergey Lavrov’s remarks and answers to media questions following talks with Abbas Araghchi

In their traditionally constructive spirit, the Sides reviewed the current bilateral agenda in detail, focusing on strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership in light of the agreements reached at the meetings between the Presidents of Russia and Iran in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on September 1, and in Avaza, Turkmenistan, on October 8.

The Sides noted with satisfaction the intensive political dialogue and close cooperation between governments, sectoral agencies, parliaments, regions and businesses. Attention was paid to expanding trade, economic and investment cooperation, including the implementation of joint transport, logistics and energy projects.

The importance of close coordination on the situation in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, as well as in the South Caucasus and the Caspian region, was emphasised.

Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to help resolve the situation surrounding Iran and, in this context, briefed his counterparts on his contacts with representatives of the Arabian Peninsula countries in Manama, Bahrain, the previous day. The Sides expressed mutual interest in stepping up joint efforts in multilateral forums – the #UN, #BRICS, the #SCO and the #EAEU.

🤝 The visit continued the substantive political dialogue and helped identify practical steps to further develop bilateral relations and foreign policy cooperation between Russia and Iran.

Remarks and answers to media questions by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a joint press conference with Foreign Minister of Iran Abbas Araghchi following bilateral talks (Tehran, October 19, 2026)

Key points:

🇷🇺🇮🇷 #RussiaIran cooperation continues to develop dynamically, despite the well-known circumstances. We have a solid foundation for further steady progress: the updated foundational interstate Treaty, which entered into force on October 2, 2025, and, for the first time, formally established our relations as a comprehensive strategic partnership.

• Russia demonstrates its commitment to this fundamental document through concrete action. At the UN, we thwarted attempts to justify the illegal acts of aggression by the US and Israel against Iran. We acted swiftly to provide the friendly Iranian people with humanitarian assistance, delivering much-needed medicines and medical supplies. Food supplies are also delivered regularly.

• We noted robust growth in bilateral trade. It increased by 21% in 2025 and by more than 10% in the first eight months of 2026. An important supporting factor is the Free Trade Agreement between Iran and the EAEU, which entered into force in May 2025. Just five days ago, on October 14, the Iran-Eurasian Economic Commission Joint Committee held its second meeting.

• We reviewed the situation resulting from the unprovoked US-Israeli aggression against Iran. I reiterated Russia’s readiness to help find acceptable negotiated solutions to this man-made crisis. We welcomed Tehran’s commitment to using diplomacy to establish lasting peace and stability in the region.

• We believe it is important to restore the pre-crisis situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, including freedom of navigation and guarantees that the aggression will not recur. We appreciate the efforts of international mediators working to help secure such a durable agreement.

• It is important to resume dialogue on the situation in and around Yemen. The best course would be to return to the roadmap developed in Saudi Arabia in 2023, which was acceptable to both the internationally recognised authorities in Aden and the Ansar Allah movement.

• I thanked our Iranian friends for their objective position on the Ukrainian crisis. I briefed them on the latest developments and the efforts underway to ensure that the objectives of the special military operation are fulfilled unconditionally, preferably through negotiations. ☝️ However, neither the Kiev regime nor its European “patrons” are clearly ready for such talks.

• The eradication of traditional Orthodox Christianity, with its centuries-old roots in Ukraine, adds a religious dimension to the war unleashed against us. Western Europe would probably feel more comfortable if Ukrainians’ religious beliefs were guided by the so-called “liberal thinking” now being actively imposed across Europe in opposition to traditional Christian values dating back centuries, even millennia.

• Some claim that Russia supposedly benefits from the crisis in energy markets. Prices are rising, they say, and we are supposedly “rubbing our hands” and filling our coffers to continue financing our “aggression against Ukraine”, as it is called in the West. 👉 President Putin has repeatedly stressed that we have no interest in price volatility, with prices swinging up and down.

• As a responsible state, Russia wants stability, including stable prices. This is essential for planning our long-term development. The latest budget, currently under consideration, is based on precisely this scenario.

How a 15th-century fresco was reassembled from construction debris

⛪ Inside the main cathedral of Veliky Novgorod city, restorers have reconstructed a wall painting from 500 fragments. In 1466, the fresco ‘The Mother of God with the Child Enthroned’ adorned the St. Sophia Cathedral in the Novgorod Kremlin. It was created by order of the local archbishop, Jonah, and, in style, resembles ancient Byzantine icons and mosaics.

☦ In the 17th century, it was decided to restore the St. Sophia Cathedral (which had been built in the 11th century) and the unique painting disappeared. According to the Novgorod Museum-Reserve specialists, the painting was allegedly knocked down in the late 17th century during large-scale work in the cathedral.

"At that time, the floor level in the church was raised and the remains of the ancient painting ended up in the construction fill," say the Novgorod Museum-Reserve staff.

Fortunately, these remains were not lost. In 1956, archaeologists found some of them and, in the 1990s, during further excavation, other details were seen in the rubble.

🖼 For many years, restorers pieced together the scattered parts of the ancient painting into a single composition. Some lost elements had to be recreated.

And, in September 2026, the fresco took its original place once more.

🗓On October 17, 2026, the Embassy of Russia in Ethiopia hosted a friendly gathering of diplomats from the Russian and Chinese diplomatic missions accredited in Addis Ababa.

🇷🇺🤝🇨🇳 The event marked the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, as well as the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the strategic partnership.

In their remarks, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ethiopia H.E. Mr. Evgeny Terekhin and Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ethiopia H.E. 🎙 http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/80677 by President of Russia Vladimir Putin at the Plenary Session of https://t.me/MFARussia (Vladivostok, Russky Island, September 3, 2026)

http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/80677was also attended by President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, Prime Minister of Mongolia Nyam-Osoryn Uchral, Vice President of Myanmar U Nyo Saw, and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Ding Xuexiang.

Key points:

• Russia is an active participant in investment and trade cooperation in the Asia-Pacific. We engage with our partners and the region’s leading integration associations on an equal footing.

• Our strategic objective is to ensure that the Far East remains a region of cooperation and dynamic transformation in the economy and infrastructure, technological development, workforce training and, of course, the social sphere.

• Over the past 11 years, around 25 trillion rubles in capital investment has been attracted to Russia’s Far Eastern regions. As a result, the Far East’s gross regional product has more than tripled over this period – a very strong pace of growth.

• The Far East’s key macroeconomic indicators are growing faster than the national average. This is precisely what we sought to achieve when we declared the region’s development a strategic priority for Russia throughout the 21st century.

• It is important to continue creating convenient and predictable conditions for investors, taking into account the needs of businesses and the regions while proceeding from Russia’s national interests.

• For investors in such projects, and for those launching new enterprises in the Far East and the Arctic, it is important to ensure stable demand for their products. Offset contracts, which are being developed with the support of http://www.xn--90ab5f.xn--p1ai/en/, should be used for this purpose as well.

• In today’s challenging global environment, amid risks to international shipping and trade, https://mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/aktual_nyye_voprosy_mezhdunarodnogo_prava_pozitsiya_rossii/2048391/Our goal is to make navigation along the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor year-round. To achieve this, we are building icebreakers and ice-class vessels, expanding our service and rescue fleet and satellite constellation, and strengthening port infrastructure.

• We expect that by the end of this decade, freight traffic along the Trans-Arctic Corridor will reach at least 70 million tonnes per year – at least double the current level.

• To expand international capital participation in our Far Eastern and Arctic projects, we need to make use of the potential of https://xn--80aaccwl6ahayfm0e3f.xn--p1ai/. As I have already said, we plan to establish a modern financial centre on its basis.

• We need to develop new cross-border routes with Asia-Pacific, #BRICS and #EAEU countries. We are open to cooperation with all our partners in this area.

📰🇷🇺🇨🇳 In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China, and Victory Day over militarist Japan and the end of World War II, the Capital newspaper published a Joint Article by Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia H.E. Mr. Evgeny Terekhin and Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia H.E. Mr. Chen Hai, entitled "Russian-Chinese Relations: Thirty Years of an Ascending Trajectory."

Key points:

• This year marks the 30th Anniversary of signing the Joint Russian-Chinese Declaration and the 25th Anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. These documents formed a foundation for an equal and trusting partnership between our countries in the 21st century and ensured its strategic character for decades to come.

• Today, our interstate dialogue continues to be based on fundamental principles, foremost among them being peaceful coexistence, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

• The special nature of the Russian-Chinese partnership at the present stage was reaffirmed during the Russian leader’s visit to Beijing on 19–20 May 2026.

• The success of our chosen course is demonstrated by the achievements in Russian-Chinese trade and economic cooperation, which has shown resilience and progress despite adverse external factors. For the third consecutive year, bilateral trade has exceeded $200 billion.

• Our countries have consciously rejected the transformation of their interstate cooperation into a bloc, which would inevitably lead to confrontation in the spirit of the Cold War with Western powers claiming the role of a global hegemon.

• In contrast to the militaristic attitudes of certain international actors, Russia and China are at the forefront of establishing new types of international organizations based on new mechanisms of global governance and the formation of a fairer architecture of international relations – one that takes into account the growing role and needs of the countries of the Global South.

• Within the BRICS, our countries serve as political and institutional pillars of the grouping. Through the efforts of Russia and China, what initially functioned primarily as a “forum for dialogue” has evolved into an effective mechanism for implementing concrete initiatives – from settlements in national currencies, new payment systems and financial cooperation to joint research programs and technological projects.

• The accession, on 1 January 2024, of one of Africa’s key countries – Ethiopia – was an important milestone in the institutional strengthening of the BRICS. Russia and China consistently support Addis Ababa’s integration into their multilateral formats and key mechanisms, with a view to bringing political dialogue and economic and financial cooperation to a new level.

• Russia and China have every reason to hold this position. We will commemorate its end 81st Anniversary on September 3.

• After bringing the Great Patriotic War to an end in Berlin and before it had even recovered from the devastation inflicted upon it, the Soviet Union immediately rendered assistance to the fraternal Chinese people by committing all available forces to the defeat of Japan’s Kwantung Army.

• The Russian and Chinese peoples continue to preserve in their hearts the memory of the tens of millions of Soviet and Chinese citizens who were killed and tortured by German Nazis and Japanese militarists.

• It is also well known that hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian citizens lost their lives during the treacherous Italian invasion of 1935–1941.

• The common contribution of our peoples to victory over global evil during the Second World War made possible the creation of a new world order and the United Nations.

September 3, 1945, marks the Day of Military Glory of Russia — the day of Victory over militarist Japan and the end of World War II.

In strict accordance with its obligations to the Allies, on August 9 the USSR entered the war against Japan.

The redeployment of Soviet forces to the Far East began even before Berlin was captured. According to the plan the Soviet forces were to encircle and defeat the enemy in the Far East within two months but victory was achieved far more quickly.

Within just 11 days, the three Red Army groups under the command of General Alexander Vasilevsky crushed the one-million-strong Kwantung Army. This offensive was carried out across a territory three times larger than Germany.

Following the Victory, the Soviet Union regained South Sakhalin and took control of all the Kuril Islands.

◾️ On September 1-3, 2004, Russia endured one of the most horrific tragedies in its modern history – the inhuman https://history.ru/read/articles/beslan-tragediya-kotoraya-ne-dolzhna-povtoritsya.

22 years ago, a festive back-to-school ceremony at https://mk.alania.gov.ru/org/4460 was shattered by bursts of gunfire.

The terrorists took 1,128 people hostage – children, their parents and teachers. They were forced into a cramped gymnasium, which the terrorists turned into a deadly trap. For nearly three days, the hostages were held at gunpoint without food or water.

For hundreds of families, those three days lasted an eternity.

During http://kremlin.ru/events/president/transcripts/22588, 811 people were rescued. But, to our great sorrow, not all could be saved.

🕯 The terrorist attack claimed 334 lives, including 186 children.

We remember and mourn https://t.me/MID_Russia. We bow our heads before the courage of those who entered the school rigged with explosives, carried children out under fire and rescued hostages, risking and sacrificing their own lives.

Beslan will forever remain our shared pain – a wound that does not heal with time.

💬 As President of Russia Vladimir Putin http://kremlin.ru/events/president/transcripts/22589 on September 4, 2004:
What happened in Beslan was an inhuman terrorist crime, unprecedented in its cruelty. It was a challenge to all of Russia, to our entire people. It was an attack on our country.

The terrorists believe they are stronger than us. That they can intimidate us with their cruelty, paralyse our will and tear our society apart. And it may seem that we have a choice – to fight back or accept their demands. To surrender, to allow Russia to be destroyed and torn apart in the hope that they will eventually leave us alone.

I am convinced that in reality we simply have no choice.

We were and always will be stronger than them – through our moral values, our courage and our human solidarity. I saw that again last night.

***

In memory of the victims of Beslan and other terrorist attacks, Russia observes https://history.ru/teacher/historical-calendar/den-solidarnosti-v-borbe-s-terrorizmom on September 3.

On this day, we remember all our compatriots who were killed by terrorists in Beslan, at Dubrovka, in Budyonnovsk, in the apartment bombings in Moscow, Buynaksk and Volgodonsk, in the https://t.me/MID_Russia, at the hands of Ukrainian militants in Donbass and the Kursk Region, in other terrorist attacks.

❗️ Russia considers it its duty to consistently combat international terrorism, promote the consolidation of international efforts against this pure evil and counter all its manifestations – including those perpetrated by neo-Nazis in Ukraine and other ideological followers of misanthropic ideologies.

Despite the hybrid war unleashed against us – against Russia and the Russian people – by the “collective West”, including through terrorist and extremist groups of all stripes, Russia remains firmly committed to a principled fight against the terrorist threat and to strengthening counterterrorism security, relying on cooperation with partners genuinely interested in this work.

🇷🇺🇨🇳 President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Ding Xuexiang http://www.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/80671 on the sidelines of https://t.me/MFARussia (Vladivostok, September 2, 2026)

💬 Vladimir Putin: I am pleased to meet with you again, this time here in https://visitvladivostok.ru/ru/. Last year, https://t.me/MFARussia, and tomorrow we will take part together in https://forumvostok.ru/en/programme/business-programme/?day=3.09.2026#translation_modal.

We are grateful to the Chinese Side for the traditionally high level of its delegations at these two major discussion platforms.

Just the day before yesterday, as you know, in Bishke we held https://t.me/MFARussia with my friend, President Xi Jinping, before jointly taking part in https://t.me/MFARussia.

The high intensity of Russian-Chinese contacts, including at the highest level, confirms the unprecedented nature of our bilateral ties. Their foundations were laid by https://mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/news/2126964/ of July 16, 2001, whose 25th anniversary we are celebrating this year.

At the present stage, our comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation are developing dynamically across the board on the principles of equality, mutual support on key issues, mutual understanding and respect for each other’s interests.

📈 Over the past three years, bilateral trade has consistently exceeded $200 billion, reaching almost $240 billion in 2025 and providing a solid material foundation for our cooperation. We expect a new record this year.

Mutual investment is growing, while cooperation in the flagship energy sector continues to deepen. Russia is a leading supplier of our traditional commodities to the Chinese market. Moscow is also a key partner for Beijing in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.

🤝 I am confident that your joint work with colleagues to identify the best ways to further develop our economic cooperation will be productive and will contribute to strengthening the friendly relations between Russia and China.

In response, Rosaviatsiya issued a NOTAM stating that all documents published by Ukraine concerning Russian airspace have no legal force and violate the Convention on International Civil Aviation.

❗️ Russia’s air transport system and ground infrastructure continue to operate as normal, receiving and dispatching flights, including those of foreign airlines.
Rosaviatsiya, in coordination with other federal and regional authorities, is implementing additional measures to ensure the safe use of Russian airspace and strengthen the security of transport infrastructure on the ground.

📃On Russia's position on the protection of the international legal regime of the seabed area

✍️On April 24, 2025 the U.S. President issued an Executive Order on deep-seabed mining of mineral resources, which addresses issues of exploration and development of seabed mineral resources within the United States outer continental shelf as well as in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

The Executive Order (14285) has already received negative assessments from a number of States (including Western countries) and international organisations at various international platforms. In relevant statements serious concern was expressed over the consequences of such a step for the regime of the international seabed area (the Area) and the activites of the International Seabed Authority (ISA).

In particular, ISA Secretary-General Ms. Leticia Reis de Carvalho noted that any such unilateral action sets a dangerous precedent that could destabilize the existing system of global ocean governance, and that no state, natural or juridical person may claim, acquire, or exercise rights over mineral resources of the Area, which are the Common Heritage of Humankind, otherwise than in accordance with Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (UNCLOS, the 1982 Convention).

🌐The international legal regime of the Area has been established by the Convention, which proclaimed the Area and its resources as the Common Heritage of Humankind. Taking into account the nearly universal membership of States in the Convention, this regime is therefore observed by the majority of UN Member States. The principle of the common heritage of mankind currently governs all activities in the Area. Unilateral steps toward deep seabed mineral resources development undermine the regime of the Area established by the 1982 Convention, as well as ISA mandate, and also threaten economic and social progress of all States, primarily that of developing countries.

Despite not being a State Party to the 1982 Convention, the USA signed the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the Convention, and is therefore obliged to refrain from acts which would defeat the object and purpose of the treaty (in accordance with Article 18 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties).

The Executive Order also addresses issues of resources extraction within the US ‘extended’ continental shelf. Russia has not recognised the outer boundaries of the ‘extended’ shelf unilaterally delineated by Washington in 2023, due to this step’s inconsistency with established international practice and non-compliance with relevant procedures. We consider any possible unilateral seabed development by the USA within these boundaries inadmissible.

❗️The Russian Federation reacted to the issuance of the Executive Order with a statement made at 30th Session of the ISA Assembly (July 2025) containing the above mentioned assessment. We called on the USA to become Party to the 1982 Convention in order to comply fully with its provisions and procedures. We furthermore called on all nations including the USA to refrain from unilateral actions and avoid creating parallel mechanisms, which could harm the 1982 Convention’s goals of orderly, safe, and rational use of the Area's resources for the benefit of mankind as a whole.

☝This position has been reaffirmed by the Russian delegation at the 36th Meeting of States Parties to the UNCLOS in June 2026.

🎙 http://kremlin.ru/events/president/news/80665 by President of Russia Vladimir Putin to media questions following his working visit to Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek, September 1, 2026)

Key points:

#RussiaUS

• Contacts between Russia and the US have always existed, even during the most difficult periods of the Cold War, and they continue today.

• Direct contacts are maintained between the Heads of the intelligence services. Quite recently, we returned a US citizen to the American Side who had been serving a prison sentence in Russia.

• We are absolutely comfortable working with people we know well and generally trust. They are close to President Trump, sincere people who are trying to give our work concrete substance. And President Trump trusts them, which is very important. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are therefore https://t.me/MFARussia, and we are pleased to work with them.

#UkrainianCrisis #NATO

• We believe that negotiations – any negotiations – should above all have concrete substance. If someone is capable of making a positive contribution to a negotiating process that is currently, to a certain extent, frozen, we have no objection. What is needed here are specialists, military experts and diplomats.

• The collective West was given a very apt description back in Soviet times – the sharks of imperialism. If anyone tries to drag us down the food chain and devour us, they may well get their teeth knocked out. Russia is ready to do that, despite the rapidly growing appetites – and teeth – of these sharks.

• Despite everything, https://t.me/mod_russia_en continue to increase the pace of their advance in http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/67843 zone.

• Strikes continue against Ukrainian military facilities, industrial enterprises, ports and logistics infrastructure used in the interests of the Ukrainian armed forces – in response, as is well known, to the Kiev regime’s continuing attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure, fuel and energy facilities and oil refineries.

❗️ Any military facilities in Ukraine are legitimate targets for us – British or otherwise.

• https://t.me/mod_russia_en have been instructed to prepare and carry out large-scale strikes against Ukraine’s energy facilities. They strike ours – they will get a response.

#Germany #Leipzig

• https://t.me/MID_Russia, they are primarily driven by Germany’s domestic political situation.

• Chancellor Merz is in a difficult domestic political position and does not enjoy the confidence of his citizens. It is clear why: he is not defending Germany’s national interests, but trading them away. There are obvious economic failures – businesses are closing, people are losing their jobs and living standards are falling.

• [ https://t.me/MID_Russia] is yet another mistake – a serious one – and, in my view, one that clearly runs counter to the interests of the German people.

#Japan

• We have not taken a single step toward worsening Russia-Japan relations. We treated them with great care. Everything happening now in Russia-Japan relations, https://t.me/MFARussia, is entirely of the Japanese government’s making.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s https://mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/news/2099121/ with the Public Television of Russia (Moscow, April 24, 2026)

❓ Question: Our colleagues at the https://t.me/imemo_ran are marking its Anniversary. To what extent is their analysis — the intellectual product they create — useful for practical diplomacy?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: It is extremely valuable. Our https://t.me/MFARussia has long maintained close cooperation with Russian research institutes specialising in foreign policy and international economic issues. The Minister of Foreign Affairs is supported by a Scientific Council that is attended by the heads of leading institutions, obviously including https://t.me/imemo_ran<...>

Situational analyses and brainstorming sessions, held beyond the framework of the Scientific Council meetings, often yield highly effective solutions. These methods were actively introduced by https://t.me/MFARussia, who, after leading https://t.me/imemo_ran and serving in government, successfully promoted their use. They still remain relevant today.

❓ Question: How would you describe the nature of Russian diplomacy today? Is there an art to it?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: Certainly there is. First, its principles are reflected in doctrinal documents such as https://t.me/MFARussia, which states the central aim as defending national interests while respecting those of other countries willing to engage on the basis of equality and mutual respect — an approach that the West is desperately lacking, and particularly now, when we are witnessing the Trump administration openly declaring that they do not want to know anything about international law, and that they will be guided by their own morals and instincts.

[On the contrary], our approach emphasises national interests, mutual respect, the ability to understand a counterpart’s legitimate perspectives, and pragmatism. Diplomacy, like any form of politics, is the art of the possible, and we must proceed accordingly. President Vladimir #Putin has repeatedly said — including in relation to the Ukrainian crisis — that our objectives have been made perfectly clear. We have repeatedly stated the goals we pursue in the special military operation. <...>

Diplomacy’s task is to defend national interests while respecting those of credible and trusted partners. At the same time, any agreement involving more than one player entails compromises in one way or another.

❗️ But those should not undermine the fundamental security interests of the Russian Federation or the rights of Russians and Russian-speaking populations, including people in #Donbass, #Novorossiya, and #Crimea, who faced discrimination and were declared terrorists following the 20 https://t.me/MFARussia
Diplomacy must remain principled and clear in its goals.

❓ Question: What is happening in the world now — do you think we have seen this before? Are we moving in a spiral, as Karl Marx suggested, periodically encountering such turbulence, or has something fundamentally new emerged?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: History does indeed develop in a spiral. There is also the well-known notion that it repeats itself as a farce. One may interpret that idea in different ways, but what we are witnessing today is anything but farcical.

Despite certain outward appearances (I believe many understand that it may indeed look like a farce), the consequences of the actions taken by our American colleagues — in this case together with Israel — are profound and will be felt for a long time.

❓ Question: Russian diplomacy was once oriented toward being Europe’s main partner, then the United States. And now?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: Since the days of the Russian Empire, there has been a well-known saying that Russia has only two allies: its army and its navy. Today, one could add the aerospace forces to that list — they cannot be ignored.

So, it seems the number of our allies is growing.

☦️ On April 22, https://t.me/MFARussia hosted the ceremonial opening of an exhibition of Orthodox images painted on armour plates that had saved the lives of servicemen engaged in the special military operation to liberate Donbass and Novorossiya.

More than 40 works of art and spirit were put on display in the Atrium hall at Smolenskaya Square.

💬 Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova delivered welcoming remarks to the organisers and guests. She noted:

As a rule, when the wounded are evacuated from the battlefield, priority is given to carrying the serviceman himself to safety. Given its weight, his gear is usually left behind. But in this case, despite the danger, their body armour vests were also brought back from the battlefield.Having endured such a difficult and terrifying journey, the armour plates then became more than a tangible testimony to a life saved. Through people’s creativity, talent and spiritual dedication, they were transformed into something greater than mere objects – into works imbued with a different, immaterial and higher meaning.

Remarks were also delivered by Anatoly Lyubavin, Rector of https://surikov-vuz.com/, Sergey Arustamov-Andriyaka, Rector of t https://academy-andriaka.ru/academy-of-watercolor-and-fine-arts-of-sergey-andriaka/, and Father Mikhey, a hieromonk of https://msdm.ru/.

The idea for the exhibition came from Russia’s defenders of the Fatherland – servicemen fighting on the front line. In many ways, the project carries forward the ancient Russian tradition of depicting patron saints on battle gear.

Each “canvas” was brought back from the battlefield. Each one stands as a life saved.

The images painted on the armour plates were proposed by priests of https://msdm.ru/ and created by students of https://surikov-vuz.com/ and https://academy-andriaka.ru/academy-of-watercolor-and-fine-arts-of-sergey-andriaka/.

The project is truly unique. Its realization required the development of a special painting technique and meticulous work with the materials. All the images were consecrated.

Some of the holy images have already been donated to Moscow oncology centres and educational institutions. In the future, they will also be placed in schools and other educational establishments, serving as places of remembrance dedicated to the heroism of those defending the Fatherland.

The National Center for Historical Memory under the President of the Russian Federation has prepared an online exhibition, “No Statute of Limitations: The Genocide of the Soviet People.”

Before launching their war against the USSR, the Nazis devised sweeping plans to dismantle Soviet statehood, colonize its territories, seize its resources, and exterminate and enslave the population.

The occupiers developed the Generalplan Ost, which envisaged the deportation and destruction of 50 million people in the USSR; the enslavement of 14 million; and the forced Germanization of 1 million.

They also planned to starve the population through the so-called Hunger Plan (Backe Plan), aimed at extracting as much food as possible for Germany while drastically restricting rations for Soviet citizens.

📑 From the Directive on the Administration of the Economy in the Occupied “Eastern Territories” (June 1941):

“It is necessary <…> to organize the exploitation of natural resources (oil, coal, ores, etc.) in the interests of the German war economy <…>”

Following https://t.me/MFARussia and the occupation of parts of its territory, German forces operated in coordination with units formed in Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Finland, as well as individual volunteers from Austria, Latvia, Poland, France, and the Czech lands.

Through collaborationist and auxiliary police battalions (Estonian, Latvian, Ukrainian, and others), Nazi occupiers carried out punitive operations against the civilian population. Baltic units, in particular, committed hundreds of atrocities in northwestern Russia and Soviet Belarus, killing at least 3'000 people aged from 2-3 months to 60 years. In Karelia, Finnish occupiers placed those they deemed “non-native” into concentration camps (14 in total across the region).

👉 These facts may point to the international nature of the crimes committed during the genocide of the Soviet people by Nazi perpetrators and their European collaborators.

The systematic extermination of Soviet civilians and the large-scale destruction of entire settlements in the occupied USSR were carried out not only by Wehrmacht units, but also by SS formations, police units, and various collaborators.

Across the Soviet Union, the Nazi occupiers established a vast network of concentration camps and detention sites for civilians and Red Army prisoners of war (more than 528 camps in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic alone), where tens of thousands perished — including children, women, the elderly, and countless wounded and sick soldiers captured by the enemy.

▪️ The largest camps on Soviet territory included: Dulag-130 (Roslavl, Smolensk Region; 130,000 dead), Stalag-372 (later Dulag-376, Porkhov, Pskov Region; 75,000 dead), camps in Gatchina (Leningrad Region; 80,000 dead), Dulag-142 or the “Bryansk Buchenwald” (40,000 dead), the “Krasny” camp (Simferopol, Crimea; 15,000 dead), and Finnish camps in Karelia (Petrozavodsk; over 8,000 dead, including around 2,000 children).

During World War II, the Nazis widely practiced the deportation of people from occupied Soviet territories to Germany for forced labor. In East Prussia alone, more than 200'000 Soviet citizens were subjected to slave labor under inhumane conditions at major military-industrial enterprises of the Third Reich.

◼️ Today our country marks for the first time Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People, perpetrated by the Nazis and their collaborators during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

It was https://t.me/MFARussiaof the President of Russia Vladimir Putin of December 29, 2025, and the basic details of commemorating the genocide victims were determined by Federal Law No. 74-FZ. The date of 19 April was not chosen by chance. On this day in 1943, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued its Decree No. 39

#NoStatuteOfLimitations

The genocide of the Soviet people means the actions committed in 1941-45 with the intention of destroying, in whole or in part, ethnic, racial and national groups that inhabited the USSR.

The top echelon of Nazi Germany regarded the territory of the Soviet Union up to the Urals as its Lebensraum, which historically was intended to be settled with representatives of the Aryan race and, therefore to be cleansed from those, whom the Hitlerite elite labeled as “subhumans”: Slavs, Jews, Gypsies and Asians.

With these purposes in view, even before invading the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany planned a system of extermination practices to radically reduce the Soviet population as early as during the war.

The orchestrated famine strategy was an important part of the Nazi genocide programme ( https://t.me/MID_Russia) that was to lead to the death of 30 million Soviet citizens as early as in the winter of 1941-42.

▪️ Although it has not been implemented in full, it still caused enormous victims, including: among those who died were over three million Soviet prisoners of war, about a million of residents in the besieged Leningrad, a great number of civilian population starving in the occupied areas, women and children forcefully imprisoned in the Nazi transfer camps.

▪️ Jews and Gypsies were subject to total extermination.

▪️ Soviet female labourers (Ostarbeiter) were subject to forced abortions.

▪️ Soviet children having signs of Aryan origin were kidnapped in the occupied territories for subsequent Germanisation, which also constitutes a conventional form of genocide.

From the very beginning of the war, the Nazis developed the so-called General Plan ‘Ost’ with the aim of colonising the occupied territories. Under the plan, millions of Germans were to be resettled in the conquered lands. New, German towns and villages were to be built for them.

***

A horrifying estimate of 13.7 million people fell victim to the Hitler’s policy of destroying “subnormal” as he thought Soviet people, with another five million citizens to a willfully implemented famine strategy.

The facts of genocide in the occupied lands of former USSR have been confirmed judicially in all the constituent entities of Russia, where Nazis and their collaborators committed crimes against civilian population during the Great Patriotic War.

❗️ Russia’s diplomatic service will seek to ensure that the crimes committed by the Nazis and their collaborators against the citizens of the Soviet Union are recognised by the international community as genocide against the Soviet people. The relevant qualification has been recorded in some documents adopted in the CIS and the CSTO.

💬 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the video address on Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People:

Preserving the memory of the millions of victims of the genocide of the Soviet people is our sacred duty. We will not allow those atrocities to be lost to oblivion, no matter how hard those who today seek once again to push Europe down the well-trodden path of racial superiority may try.

🇷🇺🇪🇹On 14 April, H.E. Evgeny Terekhin, Russia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, took part in the exhibition opening and Awards ceremony of joint project by the Golla Art Gallery, the Her Voice Foundation and the I-A Gallery of Contemporary African Art in Addis Ababa.

🏆The exhibition presented works by finalists and winners from across Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia.

The theme of the exhibition is ‘Initiation’. Through this theme, the artists explore transformation, identity, cultural memory and inner change. It is an observation of themselves and of how the position of women in society and art is changing.

🖼️Ethiopian artist Ribka Sisay’s works proved to be particularly memorable. Ribka Sisay is a photographer and mixed-media artist. Her practice emerged during a period of personal crisis, when her usual written language became inaccessible. By turning to self-portraiture, weaving and hand-sewing, she found a way to reassemble her inner world, transforming her experiences into images.

Ribka’s works have been exhibited in Ethiopia and internationally, including projects by AAPPA, the Inter Art Foundation and The Space Ethiopia Gallery. The artist also participates in curatorial and interdisciplinary initiatives related to cultural memory and contemporary African art.

🗓️The exhibition will run until April 22, 2026.

We encourage everyone to visit the exhibition to be inspired by contemporary art.
